Tanquilla Beach

Tanquilla Beach is one of the primary shadowports in Kathol sector, located just inside a small nebula in a far corner of the sector. Beyond the station, smugglers and outlaws do not need a secret base, because that area of space is so largely unsettled that smugglers can operate in the open with little to no fear.
Actually, Tanquilla Beach is not much of a beach. Its name developed from a joke about the large amount of sunlight the station receives from the surrounding nebula.
The shadowport was the site of a major mining operation near Gandle Ott at one time. A large processing base was set up to mine Tanquilla Beach and other surrounding asteroids. When they were exhausted, the mining company moved on but gave the rights to the asteroids over to an outlaw-tech group. This group somehow moved the large asteroid to its current location about 100 years before the Battle of Yavin IV.
Catering to the technical needs of pirates and smugglers, Tanquilla Beach became one of the main smuggler bases in the sector and specialized in high technology. The tech group filled the giant caverns and mining shafts within the asteroid over the years with buildings and residence facilities to support the businesses and personnel that have moved to the station to serve the growing community. Very little, if any, of the original asteroid can be seen anymore, due to the metal plating that has been put in place. In fact, the community within the asteroid has grown so much that certain structures have grown beyond the original surface by as much as 10 meters.
