|Born over 90 years before the Battle of Yavin, Qui-Gon Jinn lived his early life much like any other student of the Jedi Order at the time. His life as a Jedi was largely uneventful, until he took on his second apprentice.
Although his first Padawan passed the trials without difficulty, it was the discovery and acceptance of Xanatos that caused Qui-Gon much grief. As the son of Crion, the wealthiest man of the planet Telos, Xanatos’s advantaged upbringing and general attitude caused him to be at odds with many of his peers, and his apprenticeship with Qui-Gon did little to change the young man. Qui-Gon and Xanatos traveled back to Telos for the apprentice’s final test, where Crion convinced his son to join him in his effort to control the planet. With his Padawan turned against him, Qui-Gon was forced to confront Crion and Xanatos, and the ensuing battle resulted in the father’s death and his former apprentice’s retreat. As a result, Qui-Gon brooded over what he deemed as a failure to properly instruct Xanatos and refused to take on another Padawan.
Many years later, Qui-Gon encountered a young Jedi named Obi-Wan Kenobi during a mission to Bandomeer. After being encouraged by Master Yoda, Qui-Gon let go of his obsession over Xanatos and accepted Obi-Wan as his third apprentice. Although the two did not always see eye-to-eye, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan formed a strong bond that would last for many years to come.
Requested by Chancellor Valorum near the end of his term to conduct peaceful negotiations with the Trade Federation, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan traveled to the distant world of Naboo, only to find that the organization not only blockaded the planet but also subjugated it as well. The deposed Queen Amidala joined with Qui-Gon to journey to Coruscant and inform the Republic Senate of the unexpected turn of events. Failing to gain immediate support, they returned to Naboo to join forces with the Gungans and push back the droid armies of the Trade Federation. During the battle, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were forced to duel against the Sith Lord, Darth Maul. Separated from Obi-Wan during the melee, Qui-Gon drove the Dark Side warrior into a small room, only to have the tide turned and the Sith Lord’s lightsaber driven through his heart. After Obi-Wan arrived and defeated Darth Maul, Qui-Gon gave his Padawan his dying wish: to have Obi-Wan train young Anakin Skywalker as a Jedi. Seconds later, Qui-Gon became one with the Force.
Years later, Jedi Master Yoda discovered that Qui-Gon had not truly died that day on Naboo. Somehow, he had learned to retain his identity after death and commune with the living. Qui-Gon became the teacher and taught Yoda, and Obi-Wan Kenobi in turn, how to accomplish the same feat. Even after death, Qui-Gon had sown the seeds to preserve the Jedi Order from total annihilation at the hands of the Sith and allow it to be reborn through Anakin Skywalker’s son, Luke.
