|Seeing an opportunity to make a quick datari, an old Rodian technician on Naboo shortly after the battle against the Trade Federation salvaged several battle droids from the battlefield while nobody was looking. Taking his newly-discovered treasure back to his shop on Rodia, he used parts from the wrecked droids for a side project to build a security droid for his shop. Not only did he rebuild a Trade Federation battle droid, he managed to improve it by reinforcing its internal structure, inserting an independent power supply, adding additional armor and upgrading the droid's brain. Pleased with the results, he instructed the droid to just stand guard and prevent anything from being taken from the shop without authorization.
The droid, dubbed GRD-1 by his Rodian master, silently stood guard over the shop without incident. As years quietly passed, GRD-1 never received a memory wipe thanks to his master's absent mind. Within this period of time, the droid slowly developed his own personality and became bored with his tedious job.
One day after many years had passed, GRD-1 was standing guard as usual when he detected an intruder in the shop. Finding someone rummaging through some items in the dark, the droid took aim and shot the intruder. After turning on the lights, GRD-1 discovered that he had shot and killed his master. Knowing that he would be dismantled once the body was discovered, GRD-1 created a credit account for himself, transferred funds from his master's account into his own, left the shop and purchased passage off-planet.
During his flight to Cerea, GRD-1 met up with a Bothan named Farak Tal'ana claiming to begin a career as a bounty hunter. After a long conversation, GRD-1 and the Bothan decided to team up and work together.
GRD-1 appears as a more bulky Trade Federation battle droid with crimson shoulder coloring. He is cunning and often underestimated by his opponents. He has no qualms about who hires him as long as he is able to do his job and get paid for it.
