|Considered one of the least powerful blasters in the galaxy, the Drearian Defense Conglomerate Defender is commonly used to hunt small game or as a personal defensive weapon. Widely marketed to civilian markets, the Defender is considered legal on many worlds that have tight security laws due to its low-power shots. As a result of its non-lethal power level, it is favored as an aristocratic weapon (socially acceptable amongst nobles, ambassadors and diplomats) and is widely regarded as more ceremonial than practical. In fact, Princess Leia Organa was reported to be carrying one with her aboard the Tantive IV before she was captured by Imperial forces.
The Defender uses very little gas to produce its shots, so it relies heavily on its power pack. Little physical damage is produced when it is fired, but a direct shot is capable of killing a human. Reliance on the power pack leads to other shortcomings. The weapon has a maximum range of 60 meters. Several components are in place in the Defender that are not present on other blasters to allow the weapon to fire properly, such as a power surge dampener for the actuating blaster module, focusing coils located in the final stage collimator barrel and galven circuitry modules in the barrel. In addition, a cooling coil system is installed on the barrel to prevent excessive heat from building up and damaging the sensitive components of the pistol.
Despite these limitations, the Defender has quite a few advantages as well. The power pack, housed in the handle, can be changed quickly. The Defender contains a dedicated computer that monitors for minor malfunctions and repairs them when they occur. The slim design of the weapon allows it to be easily hidden. In fact, the pistol can be disassembled into three parts: the handle (with power pack), the main body and the barrel. It can be reassembled rapidly, usually in less than ten seconds.
